- Why Complementary Medicine
Integrative and complementary medicine is a philosophy of healthcare with a focus on individual patient care. It combines the best of conventional western medicine with evidence-based complementary medicine and therapies.
Integrative Medicine reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, health care professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing. It takes into account the physical, psychological, social and spiritual wellbeing of the person with the aim of using the most appropriate, safe and evidence-based treatments available. The Australasian Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA) is the peak medical body representing the doctors and other health care practitioners
The therapeutic use of vitamins and minerals is far advanced over what it was just a few years ago. This is due to extensive research that has resulted in a better understanding of biochemistry and how it is affected by nutrition. With this wealth of information available to us today, we can no longer take lightly the role of nutrition in health and disease. Nutritional recommendations should not be based simply upon external symptoms, the latest fad or a mere shotgun approach.
In fact, the nutritional treatment of an individual or the correction of metabolic disturbances should be directed toward bringing the entire metabolic milieu into a proper balance.
